M6.Net  Weekly  News     July 14, 2004

Michael Guilfoyle
Director

  Welcome

This week has been all backend stuff - we take the seasonal opportunity to work on all the stuff like procedures, maintenance, administration etc. I've basically been working with the team coordinating all the little bits and pieces that keep us running efficiently.

Next week I will be focusing more on the strategic direction for the following year and reviewing how our past efforts have helped us or hindered us and where we can improve. With some analysis, this will then set the direction for the next year.

I have been working on one of our Backup servers. We have had a few problems with backups not completing. We were receiving a few errors and I am still working on fixing this problem.

I have had to setup a new server which is going to be used as an automation server. I have spent most of last week on setting this up. This server will handle automation for the new client servers in the future.

Over the next week apart from the regular support tasks I will be calling some new Support people in to train them up to join the support team as David will be leaving the team.

This week was dedicated towards the same thing that I was talking about last week, icons. You cannot under-estimate the value of functional and pleasing icons. Those 600-odd icons that were on my list for last week were finished, but now it’s a matter of grouping them and seeing if they all work as a whole. Of course there’s a few that don’t, but that’s always expected.

So often now, we’re seeing beautiful icons that look great at 48 pixels with all of their reflections and bubble appearance. But try doing the same at 16 pixels. There is very little room for a gradient little-own some detail. Within an application, it is better to have everything at 16 pixels with the option to increase the size of the icons.

An interesting stat was brought to my attention this week, and that is that only 81% of web users are now using IE as their web browser (down 4%). Mozilla has about 9% and then comes Netscape and Opera. I think that this is a positive thing, in that more people are now realizing the benefits of more standards compliant browsers such as Mozilla and Opera.

We’re hoping to be back on the Control Panel sometime this week and hopefully we’ll be able to knock it over providing that there aren’t too many more interruptions out of left field.

I worked mainly on Status change and Billing related issues this week. Developed an executable that changes the status of clients if marked suspect or suspended for over a week. Also the executable automatically sends emails to the prepaid clients whose accounts are due for renewal. Furthermore, if the accounts are not renewed by the specified period of time, then the client status is changed or accounts are automatically renewed (depending on prepaid account type).

Wrote an application to make changes in the Automation records (tables), in order to help Chin set up clients on the new server.

Fixed some issues in the Order Page, to get the IP and Country from which the user is signing in.

Will be returning to development work on Control Panel later this week. Just been using the slow time to do all the backend stuff.
